The independent national electoral commission has
assured its commitment to protecting the sanctity of the ballot and
respect results of the 2019 elections.
The INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu
re-emphasised this while briefing the press on the preliminary reports the
commission received following yesterday's presidential and national assembly
elections.
While commending the resilience of Nigerians for coming out
in large numbers to elect their leaders, the INEC boss said the body regretted
the death of some ad-hoc staff who paid supreme sacrifice in the course of duty
yesterday.
He noted that all the skirmishes and electoral banditry that
took place in some states are being looked into.
Seven fresh elections are to
be conducted in about seven states including those places where elections did
not take place.
Meanwhile, the INEC Chairman has declared open the
presidential election collation centre within the premises of the international
conference center.
