Do you know that RAV4 means "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel-drive"? Find out more about Toyota cars and the origin of their names


Toyota automobiles are arguably the most popular vehicles on Nigerian roads. They have become so popular that even a rookie car enthusiast or someone who is not really interested in cars can identify a Camry or Corolla from a distance.


Wait a minute. What do the words; Camry , Corolla and other model names actually mean, how were those names coined ?. We are about to find out !
Let's get started, in no particular order
1. Prius
Its a Latin word meaning, "prior", "first", "original", "to go before" . The Prius is the first mass produced hybrid vehicle, launched in 1997, in Japan.
2. Avensis
This name is derived from the French word "Avancer", meaning "to advance".
3. Supra
It comes from the Latin word "supra", which means "transcending" or "above" . Which can also be loosely translated as "superior" .
4. Celica
Its a Spanish word for "celestial" or "heavenly"
5. Hilux
Its simply a combination of "High" and "Luxury" �
6.Hiace
Just like the Hilux, its coined from the English words "High" and "Ace".
7.RAV4
Its actually an acronym for "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel-drive " .
8.Camry
Its coined from a Japanese word "Kanmuri", which means "crown".
9.Corolla
A "corolla" is the ring of petals around the central part of a flower. The name was intended to evoke the image of a beautifully styled, eye-catching compact car.
